Daughter Draws Gun; Dad Arrested and Strip Searched

H/T @Iowahawkblog via Twitter from Daily Caller by Jim Treacher

Oh Canada!!!! Just when I thought there might be a bright spot in the Northern Hemisphere, you pull this stunt.

Arrested dad wants answers after daughter draws gun pic
OTTAWA - Jessie Sansone and his family are reeling after he was arrested and strip searched by police after his four-year-old daughter drew a picture of a man with a gun in her Kitchener, Ont., kindergarten class.
The 26-year-old father of four said Saturday the sketch was supposed to be him, getting the bad guys and monsters. The school must have thought differently, as after Nevaeh drew it Wednesday, the school contacted Family and Children's Services and they called police.
Waterloo Police met Sansone at the school when he tried to pick up his kids he was told he was charged with possession of a firearm. He was then handcuffed and put him in one of the several squad cars waiting outside, he said."When I was finally able to see my family, after this ordeal was over, my little girl ran up and gave me a hug me and asked: 'Daddy, are you mad at me?'" said Sansone, his voice choked. "How could she ever think that I would be mad at her? She knows this has to do with her drawing."
Sansone, and his wife, Stephanie, have been together since they were teenagers. They have four children, aged 10 years to 15 months, and Stephanie is five-months pregnant with their fifth child.

Lucky Gunner Blogger Shoot - FINALLY!

Finally! Real life has.....stopped intruding. Technical difficulties have been overcome.
I have returned.
Here is the long awaited (at least by me) Lucky Gunner Shoot blog post.

First of all, I want to thank everyone at Lucky Gunner Ammo for the invitation and for all the hard work that they put into the extravaganza. It was a great event!

Soooo, let's get this party started.

LUCKY GUNNER BLOGGER SHOOT!!!!!

The sound of automatic weapons came through the closed window when we pulled over onto the shoulder to await our turn to drive up the "mountainside." It was irresistible. I had to roll down the window. A big, happy grin became permanently affixed on my face. It just got bigger after I fired my first automatic weapon. I've heard of the "machine gun smile." Its true.

The first impressions were AWESOME! The crashed glider was brilliant!

And then, "LOOK! A TANK!" And that was by me..... not by 11 year old Darling Daughter. She was soooooo envious.

Making that first turn to the guard post just increased my excitement. HOT CHI...uh, I mean Re-enactors!

We weren't in Kansas anymore.....

My wife pulled into the parking lot and we sat there for a moment......listening to the racket. My first thought was, "I have a wonderful wife. She lets me do things like this, even though its not her thing." Thanks, honey.

And then I got out of the car, kissed the wife and kid, and marched off to the sound of the guns.

And what guns!

Cannons!
Anti-tank! Machine guns! Oh, my! I didn't know where to look or go first. So I wandered about, taking pics and videoing at random. (I really need to take a course or something.....)

Yellow shirts were everywhere. Who knew that the gun blog universe was that big? Green and Grey were there too. The WWII re-enactors were the icing on the cake. And anybody willing to wear wool in that heat definitely deserves a beer for their dedication. And their toys! Tanks, half-tracks, jeeps, motorcycles.

So, there I was, watching people fire more automatic weapons than I've seen in 25 years in the Navy. (Navy! D'uh! We don't shoot guns in the Navy. Heck, I was issued a 30 year old, shaky .45 and 2 magazines to stand watch. The pistol was unloaded.) In the Reserves we were teased with the possibility that we might, if we were good, maybe, get a chance to "familiarize" ourselves with the M-60. Then we found out, "familiarize" doesn't actually mean "shoot." Frickin' tease!

So what did I shoot? Well, I had try out that weapon of mass destruction, the Glock 18. And to the reporters out there, let's clarify:

This is a Glock 18.

Not this. This is what you guys in the press usually envision when talking about a Glock 18.

It was fun. And I can absolutely, positively, without a doubt tell you with certainty, that an untrained person firing one on full auto will kill the sky after the first 2-3 rounds.

Then I had to try out my first evah submachine gun! That S&W "Swedish K" M-76 was just the thing. I was always surprised that the ammo disappeared so fast.....Where did it go?

Then I tried out the evil black rifle. The original. The M16. God I love Mattel!

I joke! I joke!

So, shooting that rifle was a surprise. It had a surprising kick and was not as controllable on auto as I expected. But, WOOHOOO!

After that, I just wandered a bit. I found some industrious bloggers loadin' up. Happy bloggers!

The first day was wonderful. So much so that I can't put it all into one post. More later.

Remington Nickel Plated UMC 9mm Ammo Review

Today was a first! This is my first ever, breaking new ground, never been done before, product review.

A few weeks ago, the nice folks at Lucky Gunner Ammo emailed me,
Also, I see that you shoot 9mm… would you like to test some of the new nickel plated stuff by Remington? An informal, laid back review sharing your opinion of the new line is fine with me: http://www.luckygunner.com/remington-nickel-plated-umc-target-ammo-review.
And I, with much kewlness, replied,
Um...WOW. I would love to, BUT...
See... the problem is that Henrico County, Virginia is horrible about zoning for firearm related business. Gun cooties, you see....

The only range in the area is in a neighboring county and they make you buy all the ammo that you shoot from them, that day or they seal what you buy for later shooting. Monopolies are like that....

Enter The Smoking Gun. Owned by Jeff Picchi, The Smoking Gun Range welcomes all shooters AND THEIR AMMO. Clean, well lit, with helpful staff, my range time was both economical and fun. The 60 mile round trip was well worth the time and gas. Cheaper too.

And so on to the review!

What was my first reaction to the Remington Nickel Plated UMC Target Ammunition?

Shiny.

Very shiny. I almost did not want to get fingerprints on them.

Being that I have some old ammo, I can see how the nickel plating would definitely reduce verdigris from developing during exposure to moisture in an ammo belt or during long term storage, especially in a marine environment.

Stats for the round can be found here.

I brought my two 9 mm hand guns with me. One a modern Glock 17. The other is a venerable war veteran, a 1943 Browning FN HP Mk I, made in Inglis, Canada.

For comparison, I also brought along Winchester 9mm Luger Target/Range ammo. Both brands have the 115 grain bullet.

Loading 10 rounds per magazine, I fired two magazines through each pistol for each brand.
One of the qualities being touted for the Remington was " smoother feeding and cycling of a weapon." Unfortunately, firing only 50 rounds total through both weapons was insufficient to determine if there was a difference between brass and nickel plated. More testing is needed...... (yes...its shameless begging! I admit it!)

The results are:
Using the Browning: two failures to feed with the Winchester ammo - one each per mag and one stovepipe with the Remington ammo. However, I do not believe the ammo was at fault.

Using the Glock: no failures at all.

And because my shooting SUCKED,......all I will say is that accuracy with both brands was adequate. Without thinking about it, I threw my target away....D'OH! Didn't think about it until I was 25 miles down the road. What can I say? This is my first review.

At ten yards, freestanding, both the Remington and the Winchester performed as expected. I shoot left of the bull with both the Glock and Browning.......and that is exactly where it went. Most of it was in the black.... I did seem to have a smaller grouping with the Remington....

I finished it off, mixing both brands together, to see how Remington would feed with mixed rounds. Did a rapid fire with the Glock. No failures.

I finished off the testing, determined to bring my confidence up by shooting something other than a 9 mm. So I broke out my Bersa Thunder (Go Breda!) and my Ruger .22.

AAaaaaahhh....bullseyes......

In a related matter,
To those trying to introduce others, (like your wife...you know who you are), to shooting, and you discover that your wife is...shall we say... recoil sensitive....find a .22 pistol. My lane neighbor was trying to introduce a gun phobic wife to shooting. His first round out of the 9mm Ruger made her jump back 4 feet. And when SHE shot...I could feel the flinch in MY booth.

So I lent her my Ruger .22 for 20 rounds. By the last five rounds, she was shooting them without help and no flinching.

Even got a smile. Welcome to the shooting world.

Disclaimer:
Please note that Lucky Gunner Ammo provided me with the box of Remington ammunition I used in this review, and I will be at the Memorial Day blogger shoot this weekend. WOOHOO!

Remember, this weekend, take a moment to remember those that have sacrificed their lives to defend us. Its not all about shooting, Bar-B-Q, and a three day weekend. We still have guys out there that don't get a day off.

Life Imitates Art - Minority Report in Oregon?

Pre-Crime Policing
Allegedly “disgruntled” man has his guns seized, and “voluntarily” surrenders to two SWAT teams and dozens of police officers for a crime that hadn’t been committed

To hear them tell it, the five police agencies who apprehended 39-year-old Oregonian David Pyles early on the morning of March 8 thwarted another lone wolf mass murderer. The police "were able to successfully take a potentially volatile male subject into protective custody for a mental evaluation," announced a press
release
put out by the Medford, Oregon, police department. The subject had recently been placed on administrative leave from his job, was "very disgruntled," and had recently purchased several firearms. "Local Law Enforcement agencies were extremely concerned that the subject was planning retaliation against his employers," the release said. Fortunately, Pyles "voluntarily" turned himself over to police custody, and the legally purchased firearms "were seized for safekeeping."

This voluntary exchange involved two SWAT teams, police officers from Medford and nearby Roseburg, sheriff's deputies from Jackson and Douglas counties, and the Oregon State Police. Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Proulx explained to South Oregon's Mail Tribune why the operation was such a success: "Instead of being reactive, we took a proactive approach."

There's just one problem: David Pyles hadn't committed any crime, nor was he suspected of having committed one. The police never obtained a warrant for either search or arrest. They never consulted with a judge or mental health professional before sending out the military-style tactical teams to take Pyle in.

/snip

If what happened to Pyles is legal, in Oregon or elsewhere, we need to take a second look at the civil commitment power. Even setting aside the SWAT team overkill in Medford, there's something awfully discomfiting about granting government authorities the power to yank someone from their home and drag them in for a mental health evaluation based on a series of actions that were perfectly legal, especially with no prior oversight from a judge, or guidance from a psychiatrist.

"The idea that Pyles turned himself in voluntarily is ridiculous," says Starrett, the gun rights activist. "There's nothing voluntary about waking up to a SWAT team outside your home, then having a police negotiator call and suggest you surrender. They had no arrest warrant. But Pyles only had one option. If he didn't come out on his own, they were going to come in to get him."

It Was Probably Someone Just Cleaning His Weapon

Rep. Eric Cantor's Richmond Office Shot At
BY Mary Katharine Ham

House GOP leadership No. 2 Rep. Eric Cantor's home office in Richmond was shot at Wednesday night. It was his campaign office, not his congressional office:

The Department of Homeland Security is involved in the Cantor case because he is a member of the House leadership.

Fox News has also obtained a threatening message left Friday on the voicemail of Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio.

I would enjoy an in-depth media report on why these threats against GOPers are entirely irrelevant, but I'm guessing they'll just be politely ignored. Either that or the violence verification and due diligence we've not seen much of when it relates to Tea Party accusations will rev up to stipulate carefully that this isn't necessarily a politically motivated attack, which it very well may not be.
Will these violent Tea Partiers stop at nothing?

Update: Richmond Police confirm to CNN that the office was shot at over the weekend and they're investigating. There's obviously a discrepancy on the date of the incident, so I'll update when I hear a solid one.

Registration would NEVER lead to confiscation. Don't you believe me?

I've said it many times before. If you want to see a liberal America, look east to England.

"They'll never take my hunting rifle." "They won't want my shotgun. It's not an assault rifle..."

The powers that be restricted hunting, first. Just like is happening here.

First they came for the assault rifles. Then they came for the handguns. Next they came...

And its always about "safety."

Are you thinking about arming yourself?

To all those that would arm themselves, especially women,

Do you feel intimidated by weapons? Do you think, because you are a "girl," that concealed carry, especially .45, is not for you? Do you have questions about guns, shooting, carry, and what people think about people that carry?

Limatune's Range Diary. She knows what she is talking about.

And she's a movie star too.

Her answer to the question, "Why do you need to carry a gun?"

And here is an answer to a related question:

The the question came, “Why do you guys carry everyday? Is there something that makes you think you are in danger or anything?”
I couldn’t give you my response word for word because my husband and I sort of tag-teamed our answer.
But what it came down to was a discussion mostly of responsibility.
It’s my responsibility to honor the vow I made to my husband almost three years ago that I would come home to him every night for better or for worse.
It’s my husband’s responsibility to do the same for me.
It’s my responsibility to protect my home and my family.
It’s my responsibility to be attentive and alert and to make sure I don’t get into questionable situations.
It’s my responsibility to defend myself.
Bottom line? I am responsible for myself. For where I am, what I do, how I talk, where I go and how I will protect myself.
(Had to do it in pink. She is a self-proclaimed "girly-girl.)

If this sounds like you, give her site a try. I know that I'm going back. And taking Mrs. Cargosquid with me.

Please leave a comment.

Gov Kaine: Background Checks on ALL Sales At Gun Shows

Governor Tim Kaine is, again, taking a stab at ending the dreaded “gun show ‘loophole.’”
He is set to introduce legislation that would require private persons selling guns at gun shows to perform a background check on a person they want to sell a firearm to.

Says Gov. Kaine: “It is long past time to apply existing Virginia law to every firearm sale at a gun show.[emphasis added.]” Kaine was “flanked” by “legislators, local law-enforcement officers and family members of Virginia Tech shooting victims at state police headquarters in Chesterfield Country.” His hope is to use public sympathy over the high-profile Virginia Tech shootings to collar and lead Virginians into further restrictions on their right to buy a firearm, even though the gun used by Seung-Hui Cho was not purchased at a gun show – he bought it at a gun shop – legally. A teary-eyed Kane said further; “I think people understand some things about how these loopholes can lead to horrible crimes that devastate families and devastate communities in a way that maybe they didn’t understand before.”

Think they aren’t trying to push this through? Ultra-liberal [state] Senator Henry L. Marsh III (D-Richmond) is sponsoring Kaine’s bill in the senate saying “It’s a no-brainer whose time has come.”

Kaine’s bill, as currently drawn though, would not require background checks on gun sales by private individuals outside of a gun show. Therein lays a cause for questioning.

1. If the governors intent is to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally deranged, what about those purchases made from individual to individual? Deranged but functional people like Cho can still make a purchase that way.
2. How may deranged people have bought firearms from gun shows and then went on killing sprees? Do we know? We may be trying to fix something that is not showing itself to be an issue.
3. How are authorities going to manage the number of people who want to do background checks so they can sell their collection at a gun show? Will sellers be able to comply? Will they have to pay for it out of pocket, or will the state pick up the tab?
4. What about disclosing personal/private information to people on the street? Do you want a stranger you barely know to find out that you are a.) a spouse abuser, b)a felon, or c.)deemed to have some mental deficiency? A negative on a background check will tell them one of these or others may be at issue since the state says they can’t buy the firearm.

Delegate “Bill” Janis of Henrico gets the issue right the first time. Says Janice “It’s a largely meaningless gesture. There is no reason why those same casual sales can’t take place outside a gun show. I’m not sure how this does anything to prevent this type of transaction.” He characterized the governor’s move as “more political posturing and symbolism than substance.” “I think it’s the first step toward the governor’s ultimate goal of banning all casual sales and or transfers of firearms between private persons in Virginia.”

Fred wants you to buy guns.

I don’t know if this is true. Probably isn’t. But this sounds like it could be Fred. Gotta love Scrappleface.

Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson today, upon hearing that rival Ron Paul’s supporters had raised $6 million in 24 hours to commemorate the Boston Tea Party, called on his supporters to match that figure in gun purchases before Christmas to mark George Washington’s victory at the Battle of Trenton.

“I’m tired of running around the country raising money that I just have to hand over to the same mainstream media companies that ignore my campaign,” said the former senator from Tennessee. “We’ve done enough this year to support the so-called free press of the first amendment. Let’s give a boost to our friends who make it possible for us to exercise our second amendment right to keep and bear arms.”
