Nobel Prize-Winner: Cap-and-Trade Could Ruin U.S. Economy

With climate change legislation under consideration by Congress, an environmental expert with a Nobel Prize-winning organization warns that the cap-and-trade bill supported by Democrats could destroy the American economy.

Dr. Steve Running, Director of the University of Montana’s Climate Change Studies program, is on the board of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with global warming crusader Algore.

During a Wednesday interview with a radio talk show host in Montana, Dr. Running said efforts to deal with climate change will fail unless they involve all nations.

"If the U.S. passed cap-and-trade and other countries did not, it wouldn’t work," he declared.

"It would ruin the U.S. economy and it wouldn’t save the climate either. So this is a global issue, the global climate statistics are global in nature, global carbon emissions are global in nature, and we really have to have an international consensus of what to do. That is going to stretch our international diplomacy to its limit, there’s no doubt about that."

Running called on the U.S. to show leadership on the climate change issue, saying other countries will follow suit. But China and India, two nations that produce large amounts of greenhouse gases, are not expected to adopt cap-and-trade measures like those being debated in the U.S. Congress.

Sen. James Inhofe, the ranking Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, has voiced sentiments similar to Dr. Running's. He told Newsmax in a recent interview that cap-and-trade won't work because "it doesn't matter what we do in America — if we drive our manufacturing base off to places like China, India, and Mexico, places where they don't have any emissions standards or restrictions, then it's going to have the effect of increasing and not deceasing CO2."

He also said cap-and-trade would amount to the "largest tax increase in the history of America."

• We expect the next Governor of Virginia to care more about the culture of Virginia than the road to the White House.

This blog also expects the administration to demand a full accounting of the Literary Fund, a re-affirmation of the sovereignty of the Commomwealth by encouraging the passage of HR-61, and a immediate action to expand the use of all the energy resources within the borders of the Commonwealth, with special emphasis placed on offshore drilling, new refining capability, and up-fit of existing refining facilities.

All crude extracted and refined within the Commomwealth will remain inside the Commonwealth and all surplus petroleum will be sold on the spot market at market rates.

Cap and Trade CO2 Emissions

The thermometer watching tree hugging enviro-nazis are salivating at the prospect of this bill being passed. It will decimate the American economy, destroy jobs and do what the marxist idiots want:

Put America on the same level as Cuba or worse.

CO2 bill will cost jobs, raise energy costs

The spokesman for the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation says the Waxman-Markey bill will have enormous negative impacts if passed.

The Waxman-Markey bill -- described by some as an energy tax in disguise -- recently made it out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The bill seeks to tackle the issue of alleged "manmade climate change" by limiting the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by businesses and power plants. Sometimes referred to as "cap-and-trade" legislation, the bill seeks to reduce CO2 emission by 17 percent by the year 2020.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu praises the legislation. "[It] is our best shot of anything I've seen in recent legislative pasts where Congress might get something [passed], and it's got a lot of support in the industry now," he told Reuters. But Dr. E Calvin Beisner with the Cornwall Alliance disagrees. "It will increase energy costs across the board," he notes. "It will probably lead to the loss of, in an average year between now and 2035, of about 1.1 million jobs."

Beisner also contends that energy costs will increase by about $125 per month per household. And he says the overall cost will be about $9.6 trillion between now and 2035. According to Beisner, for the past several years there has been no global warming -- and temperatures have been falling faster than they have been predicted to rise in the next 100 years. He also concludes that if the Waxman-Markey bill passes, it will have no significant effect on global temperatures in the next 50 to 100 years.

Beisner is not alone in his concerns about the Waxman-Markey bill. Ben Lieberman, senior policy analyst with The Heritage Foundation, offered his comments at the International Conference on Climate Change this spring. "This is an energy tax in disguise," he stated. "Energy prices go up -- but it's done in such a roundabout and convoluted way that the hope is the public doesn't recognize it as a tax, at least not until it's too late."

The bill must pass through several more committees before it goes before the full House for a final vote.

So all you tree-hugging thermometer watchers just hold your breath for 5 minutes beginning now. That will reduce CO2 levels dramatically.

...promote the general welfare...

Maybe I'm missing something; or perhaps I misread the Preamble. It does mention "promoting the general welfare" right? So how is it that Congress, all of the members of which must take an oath to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution", decide that confiscatory taxation on "evil" corporations is "promoting the general welfare"?

In this addled old brain, it would seem to me that the best method of "promoting the general welfare" would be to make the things we use daily, the things we MUST have to function as a free society, as cheap as possible for the citizens and charge everyone else double.

Lets see; we need electricity. Hell, even Congress needs electricity. Yet they impose regulations on the power companies that drive up the cost of producing and distributing electricity, which drives up the cost to the citizen. Not to good for the general welfare.

Gasoline; yeah yeah, I know, we need to pay for roads. OK. BUT!!!! why not make it easy for the oil companies to extract the crude and refine gasoline and diesel fuel, thereby making it cheaper for the citizen. Keep the road tax in place. I don't mind paying for my half of the road, (and that really is the simplest method of collecting funds for road construction and maintainence,) but jeeez louise, if we stop buying oil from other countries and start using our own, it seems to me the price could be reduced considerably. Wouldn't that be good for the general welfare? Cheaper delivery costs, keeps the independent truckers rolling, and everyone is happy.

If you're gonna tax something, don't tax the stuff we need, tax the crap we want. You want a big screen TV, fine. Its gonna cost ya another $300.00 in taxes. Now that little 25 inch TV, you can have that for the normal price, plus the usual sales tax. You want a big fast boat? Sure Bro, but we're gonna have to get another $2500.00 in taxes from ya. Now that little 16 foot john boat over there, that one doesn't have any extra taxes on it, because we know you and your kids are going to be spending the day on a lake fishing somewhere and that is definitely "promoting the general welfare".

Someone grab my clue bat and meet me in the lobby of the Canon Building, I have a plan.

Reality UPDATE

Here's an idea for all you tree-hugging wackjobs who think we have too much CO2 in the air.
If you're really serious about reducing CO2 emissions, I have a plan that will reduce CO2 levels by 50% in no time at all. It won't cost anyone any money, it is fool-proof, and it will go a long way towards showing all of us that you're serious about the state of the environment....

Last night on TV, I saw a commercial that really pissed me off. The premise of the commercial is that clean coal technology is not real. A guy is wandering around a desolate landscape, yelling into the microphone, telling us all about clean coal.

I help build clean coal facilities. I've helped build one, and we're working on another one. The technology is real and it works.

This commercial is blatantly false and very offensive to me, and I am seriously considering a lawsuit against the perpetrators.

I shoulda figured. Alliance for Climate Change. AlBore and his minions. They would prefer we live in caves and cook over campfires; then they'd bitch about the wood smoke.

I'm So Disappointed

This morning I rolled into the Chesterfield Power Station at Dutch Gap and beheld a sight I had not seen since the DHS raid on the St Francis Medical Center job site back in 2004.
At the intersection of Coxendale and Old Stage Roads were parked 25 Chesterfield County Police cars, lights flashing, with several large white SUV's close by.
Uh oh, I thought, ICE is back for another round of illegal worker sweeps. Then I remembered that most of the workers, having completed this new 1750 mega-watt, clean-coal fired power plant had left for Cliffside and Shelby to begin the conversion of those facilities to clean-coal and continue the process that will give us clean electrical power for decades.
As I rolled up to the gate, the Wackenhut guard stepped out and I rolled down my window and asked if we were expecting protesters.
"Yes we are" was the answer.
My heart skipped a beat. Hot damn!!! I get to video the best example of idiocy in action, as people who scream for clean power, protesting at the first location in the Commonwealth to give them exactly what they've been asking for.
I checked my video camera for battery power, made sure the disk was clean, found a shady spot, and set up the tripod. and waited. and waited. and waited.
Alas, it was not to be. After verifying with Dominion Security that they had no idea what time the idiots were going to arrive and that they had no permit to protest on county property, I checked a few websites and discovered that Mountain Justice had the North Anna facility on their schedule for today, but not Chesterfield.
Darn. Oh well, better luck next time. You just can't depend on anyone anymore, not even enviro wackjobs protesting what they ask for.
About 1330 I had a conversation with a Dominion Security officer and told him the idiots were not going to show up.
"We scared 'em" he said.
"Well," I said, that may be true, but according to their website, they didn't have this location on their calendar for today."
"What website?" he asked. I told him the name of the site. I love it when that happens.

Its Not About Alternative Energy

Its about breaking the middle class. Pelosi, Reid, and the dhimmicrats don't give a furry rats butt about solar, wind, or hydrogen powered cars. The only power they care about is their own.
Power to rule unfettered and impose their twisted ideologies on America and turn us into a third world country while they continue to live like the elitists they are. They already have their little piece of the American dream, and they will stop at nothing to make sure none of us ignorant peasants get ours.
The logic is diabolical. Keep the price of fuel as high as possible so we spend more of our money just trying to get by. They know that as long as we have disposable income we can pretty much do as we please. (as long as we act like adults of course.)
Disposable income is freedom. The more money you have to play, the happier you are. Some of us require less than others. (I personally am very low-maintainence)
They couldn't get the oil execs, so now they're going after the speculators. Stop the speculators, they say, and we can fix this. They even take credit for the recent price drops, because, they claim, just talking about stopping them has forced them to back down.

I've already posted video and hundreds of words about the clean coal technology currently being used by Dominion Resources right here in Viriginia. It works. Dominion Resources has and is investing hundreds of millions of dollars converting existing facilities and building new ones to use this technology. It's safe, it's clean and it actually reduces gypsum mining because the by-product of the scrubbing process is gypsum.
It's time for Americans to tell the dhimmicrats we've had enough of their Bravo Sierra.

If they want us to develop alternative energy, I'm all for that. But for that to happen, we have to be comfortable right now. New ideas are not forced in times of emergency, they are developed over beers and BBQ in the backyards of average Amercians with time on their hands and nothing else to do but kick ideas back and forth.

They continue to ignore the will of a majority of the American public, 75% of whom are ready to punch holes and pump oil wherever it is.

Nancy Pelosi is playing God

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN that she would block any vote to allow offshore drilling. This remarkable stance comes in the face of the latest poll that says 73 percent of Americans favor offshore drilling, while only 27 percent oppose it. Nancy Pelosi again displays her contempt for her employer, the American people. Her arrogance and wrong-headed philosophy have led Congress to an approval rating of a staggering 14 percent, the lowest ever.
The arguments she advances in defense of her position are, at best, silly, and at worst, devious. She says she will not allow additional reserves to be drilled because oil companies already hold leases on 68 million acres of federal land that are not being drilled. She ignores the testimony of oil company representatives who tell her that had they found oil under these lands, they would be pumping it. The oil companies need to drill where the oil is.
There is plenty of oil to drill. Known reserves offshore, in Alaska, the Bakken fields of North Dakota and Montana, and elsewhere can meet the energy demand for at least 100 years. But Pelosi and her colleagues don't want this oil produced. Pelosi says that it will take 10 years for this new oil supply to reach the pump, and then, it would reduce the price by only 2 cents per gallon. This price projection is pure fiction.
As an alternative, she says the president should release 70 million barrels of oil from the strategic reserves, which would provide immediate price relief. Is this silly, stupid, or just more of Pelosi's political doublespeak? This alternative would supply less than four days of the U.S. demand, which would not likely even be noticed at the
pump. It would do nothing to solve the underlying problem of too little supply.
Pelosi, like Al Gore, wants to end America's reliance on oil and switch to new, exotic, yet-to-be-developed energy sources such as wind, solar, hydrogen and, in particular, electric cars. America has been investing heavily in research in all these areas for years. Some significant progress has been made. No one in their right mind – which includes Al Gore – can think this new technology can be available within the next 10 years, with enough distribution to make hydrogen filling stations and recharging for electric cars viable options. It is certain, however, that by developing known oil reserves, the U.S. energy demand can be met in 10 years, or less.
There is a big disconnect between the rush to convert automobiles to batteries and the reality that the electricity to recharge those batteries would require a massive new generating capacity. The same flawed excuse of "protecting the environment" has also blocked the expansion of electricity generating capacity. If the self-appointed gods of environmental protection won't allow the expansion of electricity generation, how are the batteries of all these new electric vehicles going to be recharged every night?

By her refusal even to allow debate on proposals to expand oil development – where oil is known to exist – she stands like a barricade between thirsty consumers and a new mountain stream. She apparently sees herself as a self-appointed savior; she is, in truth, acting as judge and jury, condemning a nation desperate for more energy to spiraling energy costs for possibly another generation.

This is not a new posture for Democrat leadership. Democrats in the House, the Senate and the White House have blocked expansion of oil supplies for more than a decade. Had Bill Clinton not vetoed the bill that would have opened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge more than a decade ago, gas prices would not be as high as they are today. Millions of jobs would have been created, and every American could have saved the money needlessly paid to foreign sources for oil, simply because one man played God and defied the express will of the people.
