The Coffin on Carnahan's Lawn Was Part of Prayer Vigil, Not Threat

I read an account from the Politico last night of Tea Party protesters allegedly placing a coffin outside the St. Louis home of Rep. Russ Carnahan.

It occured to me, as it would to any honest person not interested in painting anti-Obamacare protesters as irretrievably violent, that the coffin in question was likely a prop in a political protest. The Left used countless flag-draped coffins for eight years to symbolize the war dead in protests. As recently as this week, the use of such coffins was reported as "Symbolic coffins mark anti-war protests in Washington."

One would think if coffins qualify as threats, not political theater, the press would have been interested in the lawn full of death threats anti-war protesters delivered to the White House last weekend, according to this photo.

Lets not forget the flag-draped coffins in front of Walter Reed Army Medical Center that Code Pink and SEIU says was probably just people who wanted to make trouble for their "peace vigil".

Now we wait with baited breath for the VLWM to pick up on The Hammer's research and issue story after story correcting their original lack of journalistic due diligence.

H'mm, are those crickets I hear?

"At the heart of the American idea is the deep distrust and suspicion the founders of our nation had for government, distrust and suspicion not shared as much by today's Americans. Some of the founders' distrust is seen in our Constitution's language such as Congress shall not: abridge, infringe, deny, disparage, violate and deny. If the founders did not believe Congress would abuse our God-given rights, they would not have provided those protections.

After all, one would not expect to find a Bill of Rights in Heaven; it would be an affront to God. Other founder distrust for government is found in the Constitution's separation of powers, checks and balances and the several anti-majoritarian provisions such as the Electoral College and the requirement that three-quarters of state legislatures ratify changes in the Constitution.

The three branches of our federal government are no longer bound by the Constitution as the framers envisioned and what is worse is American ignorance and acceptance of such rogue behavior. Look at the current debate over government involvement in health, business bailouts and stimulus packages.

The debate centers around questions as whether such involvement is a good idea or a bad idea and whether one program is more costly than another. Those questions are entirely irrelevant to what should be debated, namely: Is such government involvement in our lives permissible under the U.S. Constitution?

That question is not part of the debate. The American people, along with our elected representatives, whether they're Republicans or Democrats, care less about what is and what is not permissible under our Constitution. They think Congress has the right to do anything upon which they can secure a majority vote, whether they have the constitutional or moral authority to do so or not."

Rarely has anybody on the Left ever dared to speak so candidly in giving their explanation for the Middle American Rebellion of 2009 that turned out thousands of previously non-political Americans of all ages at town halls, tea parties and, most impressively, on Sept. 12 in the nation's capital.

Since folks on the Left can't possibly accept that rational people would oppose more government control over their lives, they are left with only one possible explanation - Opponents must be too stupid, blind or malleable to think for themselves, so they must be nothing more than pawns.

And who is doing the manipulating? Remember Hillary Clinton and the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy (VRWC)? Dickinson echoes and updates the familiar theme with this pack of assertions:

"Call it the return of the Karl Rove playbook: The effort to mobilize the angriest fringe of the Republican base was guided by a conservative dream team that included the same GOP henchmen who Swift-boated John Kerry in 2004, smeared John McCain in 2000, wrote the script for Republican obstructionism on global warming, and harpooned the health care reform effort led by Hillary Clinton in 1993."

And among the other suspects - Dick Scaife, Frank Luntz, Dick Armey - Dickinson pays particular attention to Charles and David Koch, and their foundation, saying "Americans for Prosperity, which has taken the lead in the current fight against reform, is a front group for oil billionaires David and Charles Koch, co-owners of the world's largest private oil and gas conglomerate."
