I’m afraid, Mary, that if you have your way you will not be legal assistant to anyone, and neither will any of your daughters, sisters, mothers or aunts. Their job, and yours, will be to create male children, and succumb to whatever beatings, rapes and “honor killings” the men you create may feel entitled to at the whim of the moment. This is the inevitable outcome of having a president that attacks not the germs but the white blood cells. Obama is giving the American immune system AIDS.

When the subject of Obama as a “peacemaker” comes up, people like Mary seem to think that the answer is to be nice and talk to people and the problem will go away. This is known as “mirroring,” and it is the blind spot that most people bring to negotiations — the idea that our opponents want the same things we do. In Afghanistan we are dealing with an enemy who insists on praying to Allah multiple times a day, who believes that women are subhuman, that homosexuals be killed on sight (preferably by crushing them under falling walls — look it up) and that any criticism of Allah, his Prophet (PBOH) or his clerics is punishable by beating or death. That is their IRREDUCIBLE CORE BELIEF SYSTEM and for that they are willing to die. We, on the other hand, believe in fundamental human dignity for all, the right to worship or not as we see fit, the right of women and homosexuals to live lives as equal members of society, and the fundamental right to say whatever we damn well choose. Those in turn are OUR IRREDUCIBLE CORE BELIEF SYSTEMS for which SOME of us are willing to fight and die.

"For the first time, I feel like we deserve to win more than they deserve to lose."

Bill Whittle, the outstanding essayist of Eject! Eject! Eject! has spread his magic to, as he describes it, "the house that Buckley built."

He lays out the logic and feeling of many conservatives, writing eloquently, what we can barely express. Some snippets:

When John McCain was sewing up the nomination in the early spring, I spent a lot of time in many comment sections defending him in as many ways as I knew how...

Many conservatives were arguing that it would be better to sit this one out, and let the country go to hell, so that we could send the Republican party a message and re-emerge from the ashes in 2012 with “the next Reagan.” I pointed out that there were two problems with this theory:

First, you may not like the fact that Grandma smokes in bed, and you may indeed want to get her attention. But if that message consists of letting her set the bed, the house and the grandchildren on fire, perhaps there was a better way to “send a message.”

And so — prior to this week — all we had was a grim determination to vote against a dangerous, socialized vision of the future. We were portrayed — largely accurately — as old, tired, out-of-touch, out of ideas, out of candidates . . . too white, too male, too square. It doesn’t matter how true or false that caricature was. That was the narrative, and there was enough of it that fit.

And then the earthquake came.

If McCain wins the primary

While the numbers coming out of Super Tuesday can be interpreted different ways, we must consider the fact that McCain IS leading in DELEGATES. If this continues, he WILL be the candidate. There might be a brokered convention, but he might be the candidate from that, too.

That said, I cannot vote for McCain as a PRIMARY candidate.

I have seen many pundits and private citizens profess that they cannot support McCain in any fashion. Fair enough. I even agree with many of their reasons. They say that they will stay home.
However, a President is not the only thing for which we are voting.

Stanley Kurtz at The Corner puts it best:

"If John McCain becomes the nominee of the Republican Party, it would be flat-out madness for conservatives to stay home on election day. No, I am not demanding that McCain’s conservative opponents vote for him in the general election."
"I never bought into the idea that it made sense to punish the GOP in 2006, presumably to build momentum for a great Republican victory in 2008. That strategy doesn’t seem to have gotten us very far."
"If, on the other hand, McCain wins the presidency, conservatives have every reason to want as large a GOP presence as possible in Congress — to help McCain confirm conservative justices (and encourage him to nominate them), and to constrain McCain on issues like immigration. (There’s a slogan for you: "Constrain McCain: GOP Congress in 2008") It seems to me that it’s in the interests of McCain’s die-hard opponents to call just an enthusiastically for conservatives to vote for a GOP congress as they are calling for opposition to McCain. If conservatives react to the anti-McCain message by staying home, rather than voting for a GOP congress, then we truly will have shot ourselves in the foot."

While McCain has shown no respect for my ideals and has sponsored laws that have grown the government and restricted my rights, this is war. And as someone said before, you fight the war with the army you have. We tried to build the army that we wanted. We got the army that we have. We have NO good choices. But I have finally been convinced on the best thing to do on election day.

McCain was a battle. The war is against Clinton and Obama. They are the enemy.

While McCain may disagree with the conservatives, the Democrats, especially Clinton and Obama, HATE US AND WANT OUR SIDE TO BE DEFEATED IN DETAIL!
They want the GOP gone.

I will support the candidate that fights that enemy. Even if he does it with his right arm tied behind his back.

And then I'm getting drunk.

If McCain was a true Republican, HE would drop out. Vote for Romney in the Primary.

Voting for a President - What to do, what to do....

I DO NOT like McCain. I think he is a democrat in disguise with fascist tendencies. I think he's a war hero. I also think that he has no clue on being a true conservative.

I'm not that fond of Romney. He's a liberal too. Because he is a former Governor, he has a better record. His record does not deal with "making" law, but in either vetoing, or approving and then executing, laws made by others on a state level. So he has had less chance to offend the Constitution.

Both are "flip-floppers."

I don't know whether I will write in Fred Thompson for the primary. I think that it will depend on how the vote is going. I want to "send a message" but, my fear is that, once again, liberals will cross over. And the vote, in our open primary, will go to John McCain.

And I don't know how I will vote, if I do, on election day. One persuasive argument says that if I don't vote for McCain, if he is the candidate, I am crazy; that I'm letting principles push me into political suicide. And they are right. A Clinton or Obama Presidency will hurt this country terribly. But will a McCain Presidency be much better? Rachel Lucas thinks that I, and others like me, are insane:

Okay fine. Not your ideal Republican, despite his pro-war, pro-killin’-terrorists record. But. But. BUT.

Just what in the hell kind of crack are Ann Coulter and lots of other conservatives (even the normally brilliant Michelle Malkin) smoking when they say they won’t vote for him if he’s the Republican nominee? Coulter actually said last night on Hannity and Colmes that she would campaign for Hillary instead. Granted, she probably didn’t mean that, but good god damn!

I’ve read several dozen blogs yesterday and this morning, and there are even comments on my own blog, saying that if McCain is the candidate, they won’t vote at all. ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS?

Let me get this straight: you’d rather have Hillary Clinton, a bona fide socialist, liar, all-around bad person, as president. You’d rather have Obama, the senator with the most liberal voting record, as president.

Really? I throw up my hands in disgust. I truly do.

Comments by such brilliant essayists like Bill Whittle, with whom I agree on many things, looks at it this way:

We’ve lost 4,500 soldiers fighting in Iraq. If you think I am going to sit back and let Hilary or Obama cut and run, and have those brave men and women die in vain, simply because I don’t like John McCain (and I most emphatically do not like John McCain), then you have another think coming.
Because, my friends, here is the message to the GOP from 2008: A perfect dream candidate who is not elected is WORSE that a compromised, flawed, annoying one that gets us half of what we want. You may not like that, but there it is.That’s reality. Politics is the art of compromise.
Two quotes (both of which I have heard attributed to Ronald Reagan) keep me sane in this mess: “Someone who is with you 80% of the time is not your enemy.” (Even if he is only with you 30% of the time, that is still better than someone who is with you NONE of the time.) Also, “Would you rather have 50% (or 30%) of something, or 100% of nothing?

But, yet again, I am faced with the fact that McCain is a lying, liberal, fascistic, statist politician that has no respect for my values, ideas, or philosophy. And he has demonstrated that time and time again!

Romney, on the other hand, is merely a flip-flopping, ambitious, liberal politician.

But Bill's comments about the troops hits home.

This sucks.
