Something Didn't Happen

I don't suppose this will get much coverage in the States as the news is so good. No, the news is unbelievable.

Something didn't happen in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, today. Once the most violent and most dangerous places on earth, no suicide vest bomber detonated killing dozens of voters. No suicide truck bomber drove into a polling place collapsing the building and killing and injuring over 100.

No Marine was in a firefight engaging an Al Qaida terrorist trying to disrupt democracy.

What did happen was Anbar Sunnis came out in their tens of thousands to vote in the first free election of their lives. With the expectation of all of the above (suicide bombers) they walked miles (we shut down all vehicle traffic with the exception of some shuttle busses for the elderly and infirm) to the polling places. I slept under the stars with some Grunts at Combat Outpost Iba on the far side of Karma, and started driving the 200 miles up the Euphrates River Valley through Karma, Fallujah, Habbiniyah, Ramadi, Hit, Baghdad and back here to Al Asad. I stopped here and there to speak with cops, soldiers, Marines, and most importantly, regular Iraqi men and women along the way. It was the same everywhere. A tension with every finger on a trigger that broke at perhaps 3PM when we all began to think what was almost unthinkable a year ago. We might just pull this off without a bombing. No way. By 4PM it seemed like we'd make it to 5PM when the polls closed. At 4:30 the unbelievable happened: the election was extended an hour to 6PM because of the large crowds! What are they kidding? Tempting fate like that is not nice. Six PM and the polls close without a single act of violence or a single accusation of fraud, and nearly by early reports pretty close to 100% voted. Priceless.

Every Anbari walking towards the polling place had these determined and, frankly, concerned looks on their faces. No children with them (here mothers and grandmothers are NEVER without their children or grandchildren) because of the expectation of death. Husbands voted separately from wives, and mothers separately from fathers for the same reason. In and out quickly to be less of a target for the expected suicide murderer. When they came out after voting they also wore the same expression on their faces, but now one of smiling amazement as they held up and stared at ink stained index fingers.

Norman Rockwell could not have captured this wonderment. Even the ladies voted in large numbers and their husbands didn't insist on going into the booths to tell them who to vote for.

One of the things I've always said was that we came here to "give" them democracy. Even in the dark days my only consolation was that it was about freedom and democracy. After what I saw today, and having forgotten our own history and revolution, this was arrogance. People are not given freedom and democracy - they take it for themselves. The Anbaris deserve this credit.

Today I step down as the dictator, albeit benevolent, of Anbar Province. Today the Anbaris took it from me. I am ecstatic. It was a privilege to be part of it, to have somehow in a small way to have helped make it happen.

Happy Election Day Eve. I have gone into self-imposed media blackout. I have grown tired of pollsters, pundits and political strategists. I have voted. The bottom line up front is that I cannot do more than that. The outcome is not in my hands nor is it in any mortal's. That is how I see it.

If you have not voted, forget the blasted polls, do not listen to the media leaking exit poll information and calling the election one way or the other. Instead of taking in all of that, just go vote. I take my obligation to vote personally and seriously. I hope you do the same.

I turned 56 years old not so long ago. Twenty-eight of those years were spent in the United States Army. The people I served half of my life with in the Army are special people. They were my extended family then and now. When I cast my vote, I weigh my choice heavily in their favor. In good conscience I could never vote for a Commander in Chief or a political party that has proven by words and deeds to be harmful to the people who would risk their lives so that these same people might hold political office in a free nation.

I could never vote for the party that is already bragging about cutting military funding by one-fourth.

Likewise, I cannot support a potential Commander in Chief who states that he will reduce defense spending by tens of billions of dollars, slow development of future combat systems, stop development of the missile defense system and dismantle our nuclear weapons. The same man who said that the lives lost in Iraq were wasted and that our military in Afghanistan was air raiding villages and killing civilians.

My brothers and sisters in uniform deserve better leadership and the endorsements from political generals do not change my opinion. I cannot support someone for Commander in Chief that cannot bring himself to give credit to our serving men and women for the tremendous success they have delivered.

It especially concerns me that when I hear that we need a Civilian National Security force that is as strong as our military and is as well resourced. For what?

I need to decide whom with and how I share my wealth. I saw the public tax return information from the candidates. I share more wealth than both Obama and Biden combined each year. I decide where it goes.

All Americans have an obligation to pay taxes that are needed to fund services provided by government. We do not have an obligation to provide money to politicians to support failed government bureaucracies and social programs and we most certainly are not obligated to provide welfare checks to someone who did not earn it.

I believe in giving and sharing. I have worked hard most of my life and am probably more blessed than I deserve, so sharing those blessings where I believe they will do the most good is a choice for me to make. One is not selfish because he does not support forced redistribution of wealth through higher taxes. Our forefathers demonstrated how unpatriotic they believed unfair taxation is when they tossed British tea into Boston Harbor.

I have learned some important lessons over the past few years paying attention to politics. The most important is that we all need to take a closer look at home. The important elections we can most influence are for Congress.

In West Virginia, we have two Democrat Senators and two of three Democrat Representatives. Our state legislature has been Democrat controlled for decades. We rank 49th or 50th in every category that measures the quality of life in our state, except for taxes where we are near the top.

Politics has been a wealth producing business for our Congressional delegation, except for our New York transplanted Rockefeller who was already wealthy. They've brought plenty of pork to the state, but they have created no wealth the constituency. They have provided no vision for a state that sits on one of the largest energy reserves in the world. No future vision to modernize that industry for liquid fuel production. No, instead each of them and our Governor endorsed the man who said that he would purposely bankrupt our coal industry. Our state is the number 2 coal producing state in the union. Union coal miners will probably vote the party line.

This is my country. I am not going to give it away willingly. Regardless of the outcome tomorrow we need to start taking our country back from the socialists and career party politicians.

Voting is a privilege guaranteed by our Constitution and ensured by our men and women in uniform. Yet, for far too many military personnel stationed away from home, it is difficult or even impossible to exercise their right to vote.

Nearly 1,000,000 military and overseas absentee ballots were requested for the 2006 election, but only one-third of them were actually counted. That means that more than 660,000 interested military voters were ultimately not able to have their voices heard. This is unacceptable.

We must protect the rights of our soldiers—and their families—to vote and have that vote counted. Help a loved one or friend make sure they are registered, their ballot application is processed, and their vote is delivered and counted. Democrat, Republican, Independent…party affiliation or personal views are irrelevant. We ought to make certain they are able to vote.

This web site is a portal to great information that will make it easier for our men and women in uniform to do that which they have worked so hard to make so simple for the rest of us. They often put their lives on the line to guarantee the freedoms that make this country exceptional, and they deserve every opportunity to exercise the basic right to vote themselves. Let’s make certain they have exactly that.
