Homes For Our Troops In Williamsburg VA
Today I have the disticnt honor of being part of the group escorting Cpl Jonathan Jackson to his homesite in York County for the Groundbreaking Ceremony.
This escort detail was put together in about 12 hours, once I asked the right people for help. It was touch and go for awhile, but thanks to the efforts of a DC legend, Hal Koster, former Dustoff driver and the man responsible for the Friday night dinners for the wounded, the American Legion and the Legion Riders stepped up and we'll have a proper detail for this young Warrior.
I've been privileged to work with HFOT on two previous occasions, one for a Builders Brigade for USMC Sgt Steve Kiernan and one for the Key Ceremony for SSgt Dwayne Cole. Working with my crack group of volunteers, we provided the meals for each of those events.
HFOT provides adaptive homes to wounded veterans free of charge. The homes are designed with the needs of the specific veteran in mind. Automatic doors, voice activated controls, ground level, oversize openings and ramps are normal design criteria for these homes.

HFOT does great service for our veterans. Three years ago, My wife and I worked on Sgt. Mike Minard's house in Union Beach, NJ. From ground breaking to the key ceremony (which was 3 days before Christmas). We both agree it was one of the most rewarding experience we ever had. Mike's house was built 13 Ft. above sea level according to FEMA standards.
When Sandy landed the water rose 13 Ft. destroying his handicap lift from his garage up to the floor level, all of the wood floors in the house, some electrical, his AC, and fence. His neighbor's were not so lucky.
When word got out that Mike needed help. It was like a reunion of people that helped with the build. I'm happy to say, that with the help of old friends and many new ones. Mike was able to move back into his house, again 3 days before Christmas. Almost all material and labor was donated. The main thing that has not been replaced is his handicap lift.
Bob, we met twice at Walter Reed's Friday night rally's for the troops, that you put together. You're a good man. God Bless you for what you do for our Troops.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
