RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Senator John Warner plans to announce Friday whether the Virginia senator will seek a sixth term next year.

For decades, Warner has been one of the most authoritative voices in Congress on military issues and a key player in the debate over Iraq. The 80-year-old Republican would be an early favorite to win if he runs. But his retirement could give the Democrats a chance to take the seat from the GOP.

Warner planned an afternoon news conference at the University of Virginia. Friends, staff aides, close political allies and political professionals alike were left to guess Thursday what the former Navy secretary would do.

Warner had said that by September he would announce whether he will seek another term that would end in early 2015, weeks before his 88th birthday. He first won the seat in 1978 when he was married to Elizabeth Taylor.
