Faux Education, Faux Artiste: Stan Murmur
Watching Channel 6 news in Richmond Tuesday night, I couldn't help but laugh at the story about Monacan High School art teacher, Stephen Murmer, who in his spare time is Stan Murmur, Butt-Print artist.
It seems his students and the administration have known this for some time.
I laughed again at the end of the clip as a well-starched female news reader ended the segment with a lame joke.
Featured in that news clip, though, was an astute, young, female student who stated Mr. Murmer's art seemed pornagraphic to her. You'd never know it from the newscast, so I dug around a bit.
The Richmond Times Dispatch had this sentence in the midst of its coverage: "Murmer operates a Web site showcasing paintings he makes with his rear and genitals."
They posted a cute little picture of a daisy-like flower with the on-line article. Channel 6 also featured a cute butterfly-type picture in their coverage.
However, "Stan Murmur's" website features (or did on Tuesday) several other pieces imprinted with male and female genitalia. His website also links to some really foul websites.
S. M.'s "work" is currently featured in a show in New Mexico titled "Vaginaesque".
He has also posted a photo on MySpace under the screen name Butt-Imprima o Artista of a young woman, naked from the waste down in the process of "printing" a canvas. (Think Twister-Gone-Wild.)
I'm not laughing anymore and now believe the female student I saw on Channel 6 was the only one interviewed or quoted in any of the media I've slogged through that had this guy pegged. Kudos to her for speaking up.
Anyhoo, there are enough red flags popping up on this guy to stop a train.
I hope the Chesterfield Co. School Board does their homework and frees Mr. Murmer so he can pursue his art full time.
Failing that, perhaps he could work for the Richmond Public Schools where, no doubt, the School Board would give him a standing "O" for his endeavors.
