September 11

Tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of one of the most pivotal days in American history. We remember where we were, what we were doing that day when the world as we knew it came to a stop.

On that day, we saw the worst of humanity--nineteen men, and their backers, so filled with hatred that they perpetrated an act of war on civilians--men, women, and children who went to their fiery deaths thinking of the husbands, wives, children, and parents to whom they could never say goodbye.

But we also saw the best of humanity--first responders who put aside the risk to themselves and raced to Ground Zero and passengers on Flight 93 who won the first battle of the war, only to give their lives in a supreme act of love and patriotism. And we saw the American spirit in all its red, white, and blue.

Keep the memory alive. Remember that our country's enemies will not negotiate--they seek an end to our nation, an end to our freedom, an end to our values, an end to our spirit. Remember that they transformed a beautiful fall morning into a tragic day of infamy. Remember that they brought the damage on our nation--we did not bring it upon ourselves. But remember also that we are strong, God-fearing people with a tradition of liberty and community. However, in the words of Elmer Davis, "This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave."

And God bless America!
