Powhatan VA Labor Day: Allen Country For Sure!
It has become a tradition for Powhatan Republicans of all ages to meet early on Labor Day in Delegate Lee Ware's garage to blow up balloons to hand out at the parade. Mrs. Ware provided delicious blueberry muffins and coffee and the garage quickly filled with George Allen for Senate balloons. As fingers turned blue from the dye in the balloons, talk turned to the remarkable success of the Iraqi elections.
Thanks to our energetic young Republicans, the parade route in the village was soon peppered with Allen balloons. Even before the parade began people were stopping by the Powhatan Republican booth for bumperstickers and yard signs. Congressman Randy Forbes provided bottled water to hand out.
The Democrats had a booth and two youngsters walked around carrying Webb yard signs over their heads. And that was about it for a Webb "presence".
Politically, the day belonged to Sen. George Allen. People wore Allen stickers, held balloons and just about wiped out the supply of yard signs. There were Allen signs along the highway leading to Powhatan Courthouse including a huge orange "Sportsmen for Allen".
As a community, a grateful Powhatan united to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Powhatan Rescue Squad with food and music. Our county is blessed with a skilled, dedicated and top notch group of volunteers who have saved many lives.
I love this place.
