President Bush Speaks on Illegal Immigration: Oil On Troubled Waters Or Another BOHICA Moment?
If you missed it, a transcript of President Bush's speech on Illegal Immigration can be found here.
As one who has watched in dismay over the last few months hordes of illegals shutting down cities to demand the rights of legal immigrants, trashing our Nation's flag and anthem, spitting on people who dare to oppose them, calling them racist and vigilantes at every turn, I had certainly hoped for a clearer vision and a brass tacks approach from President Bush's speech this evening but did not expect it.
The debate is not whether Hispanics or any other group of "illegal immigrants are decent people who work hard, support their families, practice their faith, and lead responsible lives." The debate is about the rule of law and the security of the United States of America.
The President's proposals were not much different tonight from what he has promoted before except for the use of the National Guard (in a non-enforcement capacity) along the southern border.
This one paragraph gives me pause:
I believe this approach is a huge mistake. If such legislation is passed we will be hobbled with a leviathan nightmare, skewered repeatedly by pork, exceptions and loopholes and no one will be satisfied. The House has the right idea on illegal immigration reform - prioritize and do it incrementally in order of importance.
In other words, how about we just quit foolin' around and secure the borders?

This one paragraph gives me pause:
"Tonight, I want to speak directly to members of the House and the Senate: An immigration reform bill needs to be comprehensive, because all elements of this problem must be addressed together or none of them will be solved at all. The House has passed an immigration bill. The Senate should act by the end of this month so we can work out the differences between the two bills, and Congress can pass a comprehensive bill for me to sign into law."
