After Action Report: Minuteman Rally Richmond VA 05-11-06
The words "Racist, Racist, Racist!" chanted to the tune of "Neener, Neener, Neener!" drifted down the hill as I walked up 8th St. to the State Capital under threatening clouds. Suddenly a heartfelt rendition of the Star Spangled Banner from the Minuteman Rally across the street was lifted up. Coincidence or not, the dark clouds drifted away and the sky lightened up for a bit.
I walked through the ranks of the local anti-Bush, anti-war, anti-leadpaint people recognizing a socialist organizer, some gay activists, anarchists and peaceniks. I suppose the irony escaped them, but also present were clinic escorts from the abortion mill in the fan.
Across the street at the Minuteman Rally (crowd estimated at 100) Jim Gilchrist and other members of the Caravan were busy giving interviews while their local supporters lined the sidewalk with American flags and homemade signs.
The Caravan folks left soon after I arrived (the rally started early and I got there late) but local people stayed behind in part because Insane Hippie was doing such a spendid and hilarious job educating the anti-everything crowd across the street. He was irresistable and even got them laughing a time or two.
One of the Minuteman supporters offered me a ride down the hill to my vehicle when we discovered someone had ripped off most of her pro-America magnetic bumper stickers. We knew exactly where to find them and they were successfully recovered. Heh.
A few shots from the end of the rally - the first one shows how the sky lightened up after our National Anthem was sung:
This is a shot of some of the people who were screaming "Racist, racist, racist" when I arrived.
